The Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom (2 Kings 17:5–28), and many people were exiled to Assyria. People from other conquered lands moved there. Most of these foreigners, along with the Israelites left by the Assyrians, saw Israel's defeat as proof that the Lord, the God of Israel, was powerless. They mocked the idea of traveling to Jerusalem to honor him.
This story of Hezekiah's Passover celebration shows the Chronicler's focus on Israel's unity, the people's spiritual readiness, and the success of following Solomon's restoration plan at the temple dedication (2 Chronicles 7:14).
