Notes

John identifies as a liar any false teacher who denies that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and the one who reveals the Father in a unique way (4:2).

You, however, have an anointing from the Holy One: The Holy Spirit gives Christians the ability to recognize spiritual truth (see Isaiah 61:1; Acts 10:38; 2 Corinthians 1:21–22). Those who have the Spirit know the truth about the Father and the Son. They can also identify teachings that do not match the apostles' teachings.
