Read 1 Chronicles 24

Translations

Modern
The scribe, Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and of the officers: Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the heads of families of the priests and the Levites—one family being taken from Eleazar, and then one from Ithamar.
Traditional
And Shemaiah the son of Nethaneel the scribe, one of the Levites, wrote them before the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and before the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites: one principal household being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.
Literal
And Shemaiah son of Nethanel the scribe of the Levites wrote them down before the face of the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the heads of fathers of the priests and the Levites—one house of a father taken for Eleazar, and one being taken possession of for Ithamar.

Notes

Zadok and Ahimelech led the two priestly families during King David's time (see 1 Chronicles 6:8; 18:16; 2 Samuel 8:17).

The information about the priests’ duties only covers their organization into orders and how they assign responsibilities by casting lots. The Chronicler does not explain their duties because these were well established long ago (see Exodus 28:1–5; Leviticus 1–7; Numbers 6:22–27).
