The Jewish religious leaders tried to find a reason to accuse Jesus publicly but could not (Matthew 21:23–22:46). Jesus then addressed the crowds and his disciples to openly criticize the religious leaders for often failing to obey God's righteous standards.
This last extended teaching (see study note on Matthew 5:1–7:29) focuses on the judgment awaiting those who reject the Messiah.
