Translations
Modern
“I will gather those among you who grieve over the appointed feasts, so that you will no longer suffer reproach.
Traditional
I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.
Literal
“Those sorrowing from the appointed assembly I will gather up, put away from you they will be—a lifting away, and along with it reproach.
Latin
Nugas, qui a lege recesserant, congregabo, quia ex te erant: ut non ultra habeas super eis opprobrium.
Original
Hebrew
English
“I will gather those among you who grieve over the appointed feasts, so that you will no longer suffer reproach.
Notes
I will gather … no longer suffer reproach: The Lord's promise is very different from the warnings at the start of the book. First, God threatened to gather the nations to remove the people of Judah from the earth (Zephaniah 1:2–4). Now, he promises to gather those exiled from Jerusalem and lead them safely home.
The repeated use of I will in these verses emphasises God's promises to his people.
God shows his plans for a humble and pure group of his people (Zephaniah 3:9–13). He encourages them to rejoice in the coming abundant blessings from their saving Lord (Zephaniah 3:14–20).
