be saints: This essentially means to be set apart for God. This expression appears throughout the Old Testament to describe Israel, God’s people whom he chose (compare Exodus 19:6). God called Israel from among all other nations to belong to him. Paul calls the Gentile (non-Jewish) Christians "saints." Paul makes it plain that Gentiles who trust in Christ are now fully included among God’s people.
