Notes

  • The dew represents the richness of God’s blessings (his goodness and care). In Jerusalem, this moisture comes from winds off the Mediterranean Sea. Mount Hermon, which has snow on its peak, is known for its abundant moisture.

  • A blessing is God’s life-giving power. It shows his provision (care for needs) and protection (Psalm 5:12; 41:2). It also comes from his presence (21:6; 67:1). In the end, all nations will receive God’s blessing (Psalms 67; 72:17). Zion is the central place of God's blessing (Psalms 134:3; 147:13).

  • God gives everlasting life to people.

In this wisdom psalm (see Psalm 1), peaceful and harmonious relationships show that God is present.

These short and memorable songs were sung by pilgrims as they traveled to Jerusalem for the national festivals held three times each year (Deuteronomy 16:16). The title of these psalms includes a Hebrew word that can mean “steps” or “stairs.” Some scholars understand it to mean “going up to Jerusalem.” These psalms, often called the Songs of Ascents, lead the listener on a journey to Jerusalem to praise God for his goodness to Israel through history.
