Notes

The Israelites could not break the bones of the Passover lamb (see Exodus 12:46; Psalm 34:20; John 19:32–36; compare John 1:29; 1 Corinthians 5:7). The apostle John mentioned this instruction when he wrote that they did not break the legs of Jesus when he was on the cross (John 19:36).

God's solution to the problem was to allow a makeup ceremony one month later for two special cases (see also 2 Chronicles 30). Yet, he warned the Israelites not to neglect the Passover and to celebrate it according to the rules.

A year after Israel left Egypt, it was time for them to celebrate their second Passover in the Sinai wilderness. Those unable to celebrate at the set time could do so a month later.
