Buying and selling happened in the temple complex, in the Court of the Gentiles.
Money changers made profit by exchanging foreign money into the official Jewish currency. Jesus criticized this commercial activity because it dishonored the holiness of the temple (see Mark 11:11–18).
The close association of the temple cleansing (see John 2:13–16) and the cursing of the fig tree (Matthew 21:18–19) shows Jesus as the Messiah (God’s chosen one). He confronted Israel and warned that God judges those who reject the Messiah and his message.
