Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

And he has no root in himself, but is temporary. But on tribulation or persecution having come because of the word, immediately he is caused to stumble.

Notes

Has no root, he remains for only a season: The issue is a lack of enduring faith and obedience (see Matthew 7:13–27; 10:22), especially when confronted by persecution.

In the third major speech recorded by Matthew (see study note on Matthew 5:1–7:29), Jesus here recognized the separation of his followers from others (Matthew 13:14, 16). He began to reveal the secrets of the kingdom of heaven privately to them through parables.
