Notes

Bartimaeus probably threw off his coat because he was so happy. It could also be a symbolic act of leaving his old life or leaving all to follow Jesus.

The healing of blind Bartimaeus is the last healing miracle in the Gospel of Mark. This event and the healing of the blind man in 8:22–26 frame this section (see Mark Book Introduction, “Literary Features”).

It also connects this story to the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem as Israel’s Messiah (the Christ, God's chosen king) in 11:1–11. Bartimaeus’ cry for help (Jesus, Son of David) prepares Mark's audience for the confession of the people upon the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem (11:10).
