Notes

for whoever is not against you is for you: Although the man who was casting out demons was not one of the twelve disciples, Jesus said he should not be stopped because he was also proclaiming the message of the kingdom. This statement was a proverb (a wise saying), not an absolute rule, since Jesus made the opposite statement in 11:23. Wisdom is needed to apply a proverb correctly in each situation.

The disciples did not understand that Jesus would soon die, which was now seen in their pride and selfish attitude.
