Notes

The Jewish council did not have the authority to carry out capital punishment under Roman rule (John 18:31). So they took Jesus to the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate. Pilate was in Jerusalem to keep order during the Passover festival, when large crowds could easily lead to unrest.
