Notes

in the absence of a crowd: They waited until the crowds were not present. They did this because Jesus was very popular with the people.

The leaders were afraid of how the crowd might react if they arrested him in public.

The religious leaders who had been plotting against Jesus (see 19:47) found their opportunity when Judas Iscariot approached them with an offer to betray Jesus.
