Notes

salvation from our enemies: This refers to what many people in Israel hoped for. They expected God to rescue them from their physical enemies, especially the Romans. But Jesus came to bring a deeper salvation. He saves people from sin, from Satan, and from death.

This second song of praise in the birth story of Jesus is called the Benedictus (Latin for “Blessed” or “Praise”). The song expects that God’s Messiah (his chosen leader) will save the Israelites from their enemies. Salvation includes physical rescue and forgiveness of sins (1:77).
