Notes

The crowd asked Jesus for another miraculous sign. They wanted proof that he was the Messiah.

Many Jews believed that when the Messiah came, he would repeat the great miracle connected with Moses. They expected manna to fall from heaven again, as it had in the wilderness.

If that happened, people would see it as a second exodus. It would remind them of how God rescued Israel from Egypt and fed them in the desert.

This dialogue took place in the synagogue at Capernaum shortly before Passover (6:4, 59). During Passover, Jews would read the story of the exodus from Egypt (see Exodus 1–15).

Each story in this chapter uses the setting of the Feast of the Passover (6:4) to communicate a deeper meaning.
