Notes
The Bible allows for making a vow to the living God (Ruth 3:13; 1 Samuel 20:21; 25:26; 1 Kings 17:1; 18:15; Jeremiah 4:2). But sometimes people make silly or false vows (1 Samuel 14:39, 45; Jeremiah 5:2).
Elihu later criticized Job for claiming that God deprived me of justice (Job 34:5).
embittered my soul (7:11; 10:1; 21:25): Compare Naomi and the widow from Shunem after losing her son (Ruth 1:20–21; 2 Kings 4:27).
