And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the Lord: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.

And do you seek for yourself great things? Do not seek them. For behold, I am going to bring disaster upon all flesh, a declaration of YHWH, and I will give to you your soul as a prize, in all the places to which you go there.”

Notes

Baruch could rely on divine protection, regardless of the troubles he faced. The chapters before this one show that the Lord kept this promise. Baruch was with Jeremiah when they went to Egypt.

This chapter takes place in 605 BC, over twenty years before the previous chapters. Jeremiah’s secretary, Baruch, felt overwhelmed with problems. The Lord promised him safety.
