And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt shew this people all these words, and they shall say unto thee, Wherefore hath the Lord pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against the Lord our God?

Notes

The Lord told Jeremiah that people would question him. They would show self-righteousness and believe the Lord should not harm them.

Jeremiah's life served as a sign or parable (see “Prophetic Sign Acts” Theme Note). The Lord instructed him not to marry (Jeremiah 16:1–4), not to attend funerals (16:5–7) or celebrations (16:8–9).
