Notes
The Israelites must give up their reliance on idols, foreign alliances, and their military strength. Even though they were God's children (Hosea 11:1), their rebellion made them orphans. When they sincerely and fully repented, they could find mercy again.
Hosea created a prayer of confession to guide his people back to the Lord. God’s prophets felt both God's anger over Israel’s rebellion and the people's suffering (see also Daniel 9:4–19).
Take away all our iniquity: The Israelites should rely on God’s mercy and grace, openly admitting their many sins.
that we may present the fruit of our lips: Israel often offered animal sacrifices for sin, but the Lord made it clear that sacrifices were not the answer (see Hosea 6:6). Israel should give God true repentance.
Destruction was not God's final message to his covenant people. Although judgment must happen, God's healing and restoring grace is stronger than human sin.
