Notes

Like Enoch (5:21–24), the typical family line pattern is interrupted to share key theological details about Noah.

The name Noah sounds like the Hebrew words nakham, which means "relief" or "comfort," and nuakh, which means "rest." Noah was the first person born after Adam died (see study note on 5:5). His father, Lamech, hoped Noah would undo the curse caused by Adam's sin (3:17). See 8:21; 2 Corinthians 1:3–7; 2 Thessalonians 2:16–17.

The family lines in Genesis do more than record history. They use select details and structure to communicate spiritual truths. These genealogies show God's blessings. They confirm the family heritage of key people. They connect the Genesis story by showing family continuity.

Adam's family line through Seth records ten generations to Noah (see 1 Chronicles 1:1–4; Luke 3:36–38). The great flood occurred before another 10 generations from Noah to Abram. The number 10 symbolizes completeness. Examples include the 10 plagues (Exodus 7:8–11:10) and the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:2–17). Noah ended the pre-flood history, and Abram began a new era.

These records of family lines do more than just list names. They contrast how human culture developed. Some people rebelled against God (Cain, 4:17–24), while others obeyed God (Seth, 4:25–5:32). Genesis usually explains the history of the rejected line before continuing with the promised line that became Israel.

Two key contrasts are worth noting:

  1. Lamech is the main focus of the first family history. He is the seventh man from Adam through Cain's line. Like Cain, Lamech killed a human and lived in fear of death as a result (4:23–24). In contrast, Enoch lived in a way that pleased God and did not experience death (5:24). Enoch was the seventh man from Adam through Seth's line (4:25–5:32).

  2. Human culture and technology advanced through Cain’s line. They made the first city, raised livestock, built shelters, developed metal work, and created music. But sin still strongly shaped human life. Seth's line does not have any technological advances mentioned. Instead, people began "to call upon the name of the LORD" (4:26) and "found favor in the eyes of the Lord" (6:8).
