Notes

What is your name?: The Lord's question was about Jacob's character, not just his identity (see 3:9; 4:9). By stating his name, Jacob admitted his nature and behavior as a "Heel-grabber, Deceiver, Usurper." Before God would bless him, Jacob needed to recognize who he was. Then God would change his identity.

Jacob went back to the land God promised him. Before this, God met, injured, and blessed him. God also changed his name to Israel. This event was a significant turning point for Jacob.
