Whether they are born in your household or purchased, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh will be an everlasting covenant.

He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

And he must surely be circumcised—he who is born in your house, or he who is bought with your silver. And My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

Notes

God gave circumcision as a confirming sign that reminded all households of loyalty to the covenant.

God gave Abram's family signs that his promises would come true. He changed Abram's name to Abraham (17:1–8). He established circumcision as the sign of the covenant (17:9–14, 23–27). He changed Sarai's name to Sarah (17:15–22).
