And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation: The plant bearing seed and the fruit tree producing fruit according to its kind (whose seed is in it) on the earth.” And it was so.

Notes

In the first three days, God shaped the formless world into a place where people and animals could live.

  • These verses introduce the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible). They teach Israel that one true God created, ordered, and populated the world, not the gods of nearby nations.

  • God blessed three specific things:

    These three blessings emphasize the Creator's plan. God made humans in his image to rule in his place over earth's creatures and to join in God's Sabbath rest.
