far above: Jesus has power and authority that is greater than all other powers, whether human or spiritual beings. This includes powers in the present age and in the age to come (see 3:10; 6:12; John 12:31; Romans 8:38–39; 1 Corinthians 15:24; Colossians 1:13; 2:10, 15; 1 Peter 3:22; Revelation 12:7–9).

Paul prays that his readers gain the spiritual understanding to fully appreciate God's gifts (1:3–14).
