Read Deuteronomy 13

Translations

Modern
Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he has advocated rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery; he has tried to turn you from the way in which the LORD your God has commanded you to walk. So you must purge the evil from among you.
Traditional
And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the Lord thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.
Literal
And that prophet or that dreamer of the dream, he shall be put to death, because he has spoken in order to turn you away from YHWH your God—who brought you out from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery—to drive you out of the way that YHWH your God commanded you to walk in it. And you shall put away the evil from among you.

Notes

  • dreamer: Literally dreamer of dreams. It refers to someone who claims to receive messages through dreams.

  • purge (literally you must burn): God commanded that false prophets be removed completely so that their harmful influence would not remain. See also 17:12; 19:13.

Prophets who tried to lead Israel away from the one true God committed treason, which was punishable by death. No other religion demanded exclusive worship of their national gods. As a result, such severe penalties for worshiping other gods were unknown in the ancient Near East.
