because of Your great compassion: God's kind and forgiving nature gave Daniel hope (see Exodus 34:6; Jonah 4:1–3; Micah 6:8).
Daniel pleaded with God to save his people and end the exile in Babylon. He depended on God's mercy and God's wish to honor his name. Daniel’s prayer is one of the great intercessory prayers in which someone speaks to God on behalf of the people in the Old Testament (see also Exodus 32:11–14; Ezra 9:1–15; Nehemiah 9:1–37).
Daniel prayed for his people, knowing that Jerusalem's seventy years of desolation were about to end. His prayer is similar to those of:
Solomon (1 Kings 8:14–61),
Ezra (Ezra 9), and
Nehemiah (Nehemiah 9).
God answered Daniel's prayer quickly (see study note on Daniel 9:19; see also Daniel 9:20–27).
