Notes
forever … forever: God’s promises do not cancel human responsibility or accountability (2 Samuel 7:14). When people do wrong, God responds with justice and discipline. However, no unfaithful son of David could cause God to take back his promise to preserve David’s royal family. Even though the dynasty ended for many centuries, God renewed David’s house and kingdom in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the sinless descendant of David, and he reigns forever.
Instead of David building a house for God, God promised to build a house for David, meaning a lasting line of kings from David’s family.
David was not happy just making a tent for the ark (2 Samuel 6:17). He wanted to build a house for God.
