the beautiful sister: Tamar was the full sister of Absalom, but only the half sister of Amnon (see 2 Samuel 3:2–3). As Tamar’s closest male relative, Absalom later took action to avenge her (2 Samuel 13:23–29; compare Genesis 34; Numbers 35:19).
