Rehoboam wanted to regain control of the kingdom by force, but he changed his mind after hearing God's message through Shemaiah. The phrase man of God highlights a prophet's role as God's messenger. Prophets were important in the history of the divided kingdom. Shemaiah likely wrote a history of Rehoboam’s reign (2 Chronicles 12:15).
