Translations

Modern
Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs of my head; many are those who would destroy me—my enemies for no reason. Though I did not steal, I must repay.
Traditional
They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.
Literal
Those hating me without cause outnumber the hairs of my head; many are those seeking my destruction, my enemies with deception! That which I did not steal, I must then return.
Latin
Multiplicati sunt super capillos capitis mei qui oderunt me gratis. Confortati sunt qui persecuti sunt me inimici mei injuste; quæ non rapui, tunc exsolvebam.

Notes

John applied this lament to Jesus (John 15:25).

In this personal lament, the poet shares his vulnerability, humiliation, and deep pain. He asks God to defend him for the sake of the righteous.

These last four psalms of Book Two contrast with the earlier psalms that describe God’s mighty acts in creation and redemption, ending with God’s march to Zion (Psalms 65–68). Psalms 69–71 describe the king's suffering, and Psalm 72 responds with a prayer for God to bless the king.
