Notes
Biblical hope is not just wishing for a good outcome. It means trusting in the Lord's will and having the courage to face disappointments (Psalm 33:22; 130:5).
In this prayer for guidance, compassion, and forgiveness, the psalmist asks the Lord for wisdom. He admits his past mistakes and recognizes that his hope is in his merciful Savior.
This personal lament includes wisdom teachings and a community lament. It starts and ends with a declaration of trust in the Lord (Psalm 25:1–3, 15–22). The psalmist prays for guidance (Psalm 25:4–7) and urges the godly to live wisely (25:12–14).
In addition to the enemies who trouble him, the psalmist confesses his sins(Psalm 25:7, 11, 18) as part of his distress. Trust grows by understanding God's nature: He is compassionate, faithful, and good (Psalm 25:8–10).
These psalms develop the importance of:
God's care as a shepherd (Psalms 23:1; 28:9),
God's guidance (Psalms 23:2–3; 25:5; 27:11),
God's goodness (Psalms 23:6; 25:7–8; 27:13), and
living in his house (Psalms 23:6; 26:8; 27:4, 8).
