Notes

  • Only Aaron and his sons, the priests set apart to serve in God's presence, consumed the most holy offerings (Exodus 28:1; 29:44–46).

  • This portion was a holy offering given to God, and the priests had to treat it with respect (Numbers 18:10). Other types of offerings provided food for the priests and their families, but only if they were ceremonially clean (18:11–12).

The priests and Levites received support through the sacrificial system (see, for example, Leviticus 7:28–36). God's chosen representatives deserve payment for their work (compare Matthew 10:9–10; 1 Corinthians 9:3–10).

The instructions here came from the need shown in chapter 17 for clear boundaries between the people, priests, and Levites. The Levites had special privileges and important responsibilities. One key part of their job was to protect the Tent of Meeting from unauthorized entry (chapter 16).
