English
…and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”

Notes

If You are the Son of God: This taunt reminds us of when the devil tempted Jesus at the start of his public ministry (Matthew 4:1–11). The devil tried to use the special status of Jesus to tempt him to avoid suffering (see also 16:21–23).

The crowd mocked Jesus, but their words were still true. He is the Son of God, the King of Israel, and the Messiah.
