Literal
And immediately, going up out of the water, He saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending like a dove to Him.

Et statim ascendens de aqua, vidit cælos apertos, et Spiritum tamquam columbam descendentem, et manentem in ipso.

Interlinear

Greek
English
As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, He saw the heavens breaking open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove.

Notes

  • The phrase the heavens breaking open shows that Jesus has a unique and direct relationship with God the Father. In Mark 15:38, the same verb shows that believers also gain access to God through the death of Jesus.

  • All four Gospels mention the Holy Spirit coming down on Jesus like a dove. The Spirit, who was active in the first creation, now works with Jesus to begin the new creation (Genesis 1:2; Romans 8:15–17; 1 Corinthians 6:11; Ephesians 1:13–14; 2 Thessalonians 2:13).
