Notes

two of them: Jesus had many disciples in addition to the Twelve (see 10:1, 17). Nothing else is known of Cleopas or the other disciple, who might have been his wife (24:18). They were probably returning from celebrating the Passover feast in Jerusalem.

Luke alone records this resurrection appearance. Jesus corrected the disciples’ misunderstanding by showing from the Scriptures that the Christ had to suffer. Then he opened their eyes to understand that he had risen from the dead.
