Translations

Modern
I will not punish your daughters when they prostitute themselves, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery. For the men themselves go off with prostitutes and offer sacrifices with shrine prostitutes. So a people without understanding will come to ruin.
Traditional
I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall.
Literal
I will not visit punishment on your daughters when they prostitute themselves, or on your brides when they commit adultery; for they themselves go off with the prostitutes, and offer sacrifices with shrine prostitutes, and a people without understanding will be thrown down.
Latin
Non visitabo super filias vestras cum fuerint fornicatæ, et super sponsas vestras cum adulteraverint, quoniam ipsi cum meretricibus conversabantur, et cum effeminatis sacrificabant; et populus non intelligens vapulabit.

Notes

  • God stated that he would not target young women for their prostitution. This statement contrasts with the double standards common in ancient cultures.

  • prostitutes: The Hebrew word refers to female prostitutes dedicated to serving Baal and Asherah in Baal's temples (Deuteronomy 23:18).
