Now when Daniel learned that the document had been signed, he went into his house, where the windows of his upper room opened toward Jerusalem, and three times a day he got down on his knees, prayed, and gave thanks to his God, just as he had done before.
Traditional
Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
Literal
And Daniel, when he came to know that the writing was signed, he went to his house, and the windows were opened unto him in his upper room toward Jerusalem; and three times in a day he would kneel down on his knees and pray and give thanks before his God, as was his custom from before this.

Notes

  • just as he had done before: Daniel's regular prayer time helped him worship God daily.

  • Jerusalem was God's chosen city (1 Kings 11:36). Even though the temple was gone, forgetting Jerusalem was unthinkable (Psalm 137:5–6). Someday, the temple would be rebuilt (Isaiah 2:2–4; 44:28).

God saved and freed his loyal servant Daniel (Daniel 5:23; 6:20), but Belshazzar's lifeless gods could not help him.

This section contains stories and dreams from the experiences of Daniel and his friends in Babylon. Daniel used his special gift to understand dreams and showed great skill in the study of literature and science (Daniel 1:17). Chapter 2 provides a broad overview of history until God's kingdom appears (Daniel 2:44–49). Daniel 3–6 describes the fall of Babylon and the rise of Persia. History is moving toward a clear goal. That goal is the everlasting kingdom of God (Daniel 2:44; 4:2–3, 34; 6:26).
