Notes

  • gold shields: See 2 Kings 11:10.

  • brought … to Jerusalem: David brought these valuable items to Jerusalem and dedicated them to God. He did this in keeping with God’s instructions for a faithful king, which warned against storing up wealth for personal glory (Deuteronomy 17:17). Instead of keeping the gold for himself, David set it apart for God’s use (see 2 Samuel 8:11).

David’s military victories expanded his kingdom (2 Samuel 8:1–14). He also set up an organized group of officials who helped govern the nation (2 Samuel 8:15–18). Together, these developments fulfilled God’s promise to make David’s name well known and honored (2 Samuel 7:9; see also 8:13).
