Notes

  • Shunem was a border town in the land of Issachar (Joshua 19:18). It overlooked the Valley of Jezreel.

  • Mount Gilboa is at the east end of the Valley of Jezreel. The mountain got its name from a nearby village.

Saul consulted the dead, a practice forbidden by God’s law (see Leviticus 20:27; Deuteronomy 18:9–11).
