This verse continues the metaphor of lost sheep (Jeremiah 50:6), linking Israel's vulnerability to attack with their turning away from the Lord. Their enemies justified mistreating Israel by claiming the Israelites had sinned against the Lord. These enemies knew that the Israelites' true place of rest and hope was with the Lord.
