they put out his eyes: In the ancient Near East, rebellious leaders were often blinded. Zedekiah's blinding was especially cruel because his last sight was his sons being killed.
True to the prophecy, Zedekiah was captured and died in captivity (Jeremiah 32:4–5; 34:3; 52:11; Ezekiel 12:11–14).
