The mountains east of the river refer to a mountain range that looks down over the Jordan Valley. These mountains stand on the east side of the Jordan River.
Mount Nebo is a well-known peak in this range. From Mount Nebo, Moses could see the land of Canaan to the west. He also died there (32:50; see 3:17).
