God is patient, but he will not tolerate open rebellion from his people (see Exodus 32:7–10).
In the New Testament, the writer of Hebrews mentions this event to strengthen the faith of Christians whose trust in the gospel was weakening (Hebrews 3:7–19; 12:3, 25; see also Psalm 95:8–11).
