Study note

John 9:35

Son of Man: See 1:51; 3:13, 14; 5:27; 6:27, 53, 62; 8:28. The Greek expression translates a Hebrew and Aramaic phrase that means human being. People were often unsure what Jesus meant when he used this title (see 12:34). In Daniel 7:13–14, a human figure receives authority and an eternal kingdom from God. Later Jewish tradition connected this figure with hopes for the Messiah. John uses the title Son of Man to point to Jesus as both an ordinary human being and the Messiah appointed by God.
