speak to them: This refers to the religious leaders mentioned earlier in 11:27 (also in 12:12).
The beginning description of the story comes from Isaiah 5:1–7. The people Jesus was speaking to knew the book of Isaiah well. They would have quickly recognized this symbolic story, in which each part of the vineyard had a special meaning.
