These symptoms are often associated with epilepsy (a medical condition that can cause seizures; see Matthew 17:15). But Mark emphasizes that the cause of the child's problem was a demon (Mark 9:17–18, 25–26, 28). The disciples' failure to heal the child emphasizes the effect of the power of Jesus (9:25–26).
