Study note

Matthew 16:14

  • Some, like Herod Antipas, thought Jesus was John the Baptist raised from the dead (Matthew 14:1–2).

  • Others expected Elijah to return before the Messiah came (11:14; 17:10–12; Malachi 3:1; 4:5–6).

  • Jeremiah or one of the prophets: Some thought Jesus was Jeremiah or another prophet. Certain Jews believed Jeremiah would rise again (see 2 Maccabees 15:13–16). Because Jesus spoke strongly on sensitive issues (Matthew 5:17; 15:1–20), some thought he was Jeremiah.

At this point, people did not yet understand that Jesus was the Messiah (God’s chosen one).
