Leprosy refers to various skin diseases. People with leprosy (lepers) were ceremonially unclean and excluded from society. They could only return once they had no symptoms and a priest declared them clean (see Matthew 8:4; Leviticus 14:2–32). Sometimes leprosy was a judgment from God (Numbers 12:9–15; 2 Kings 5:27; 15:5).
