Study note

Malachi 4:2

  • The title sun of righteousness might come from the winged sun disk common in ancient Near Eastern art. It could refer to the Messiah (God's chosen one) or symbolize a new era of righteousness when God will remove the curse of sin. Israel's spiritual healing would rely on God cleansing the people and forgiving their sins (see Jeremiah 33:6–8; compare Jeremiah 8:14–15). This healing would follow a collective confession of sin and a return to God (Malachi 3:7; compare Jeremiah 14:19–20).

  • in its wings: Outstretched wings symbolize God's protection and rescue (see Exodus 19:4; Deuteronomy 32:10–11; Psalm 17:8; 18:10).
